European Youth Seminar

Fighting racism and xenophobia in Europe – Unilaterally or Bilaterally?

One of the basic aims of our organization is to enhance Intercultural education, encompassing the themes of “inclusion and participation” and “learning to live together” providing a means of handling the challenges posed by multiculturalism in a context that promotes democratic standards for conflict resolution.

It is a crucial time to be active in tackling racism and xenophobia. Europe has seen a rise in the spread of Xenophobia, especially Islamophobia across Europe, so being active and engaging with ethnic communities across Europe is as important now as ever before. Taken with the worrying rise in anti-Semitic attacks it is clear that the EU has to tackle decisively the extremist politics that seek to pillory, denigrate and threaten those EU citizens whose background or beliefs are not those of the majority population.

In parallel, after we had contacts with other youngsters from different countries of Europe we realized that there is mutual interest about the topic of “Cultural diversity in the enlarged Europe” - Young people tackling racism and xenophobia

Diversity is a fundamental aspect of all societies that concerns differences between individuals and differences between groups. The existence of multiple identities, values, cultures and faiths within a society challenges individuals and groups to cultivate mutual understanding in order to engage in cooperative interaction and experience cultural enrichment. Without mutual understanding, differences may generate conflicts that, when managed with violence, lead to considerable violations of fundamental human rights.

We, the youngsters, have to decide whether they will let the differences around us to be continued or we are going to be promoters of self belonging in this new enlarged Europe in a society in which every individual, of whatever racial or ethnic origin, is able to fulfill his or her potential through enjoying equal rights, opportunities and responsibilities.

Our willingness to join our efforts to deal with cultural diversity urged our organization to arrange this meeting. The group of youngsters from each country have already engaged in discussions through the internet in order to decide about the activities of the seminar. In the meanwhile, the participants are informing each other about the level of intercultural dialogue and education going on in their countries. Then, during the seminar, the information collected by the participants will be presented by them in interactive workshops. In the seminar the participants will be given the chance to exchange views and investigating the way that diversity and differences may well be accommodated on the basis of common values and interests. Eventually, each team will create an action plan that will take the responsibility to implement in his country.
